How to obtain a recommendation letter for public school teaching jobs (EPIK-English Program in Korea)

Please write specific information attesting to the applicant’s ability to teach in Korea. The letter must:

ü Be in Korean or English

ü Be 1-2 pages

ü Include the applicant’s full first and last name

ü Clearly state the relationship between the referee and the applicant, including the length and nature of the relationship

ü Speak to the applicant’s strengths and weaknesses relevant to teaching English in Korea

ü Include any other relevant information

You can send scanned copy of recommendation to KorVia recruiter but you have send original copy of recommendation when you pass EPIK or SMOE job interview. Document screening process requires your hard copy of recommendation letter (NOTE: Letters initially created as an electronic file are not acceptable; the original hard copy of recommendation letters should be opened, scanned and submitted as electronic files for arranging job interview with EPIK or SMOE).

Please refer to the template above and find below note that you must know before you obtain your recommendation letters.


1.Letters from only an academic source or a supervisor/superior at the job are acceptable.
2.Letters from an employment source must be obtained from a current job or the most recent job.
3.Recommendation letters from family members, relatives, friends, coworkers (not supervisor or superior), TAs (at the university), clients, business partners, parents of the child from nanny or baby sitting jobs, or neighbors are not acceptable.
4.Letters from co-teachers at Korean public schools or JET program are
acceptable.
5.Must be printed out on the letter head of the institute where the referee belongs to.
6.Must include the name, job title, address, contacts and signature of the reference.
7.Contacts must include telephone number and email.
Ink signature or stamp of the institute must be included.(Ink signature over the scanned image signature is not acceptable.)
8.Must have an issue date
9.May not be older than two (2) years
10.Letters from ESL certification can be acceptable if the courses are at
least four (4) week long and in-class courses (not online courses).
11.Letters lacking evaluation by referee and only containing factual components are not acceptable.
12.Applicants who are currently working in Korea or who worked in Korea in the immediate past (January 2010 to present) should submit at least one recommendation letter obtained from his/her former employer in Korea.
